Restaurants:

Hout Bay

  • Papino's has an excellent selection of Italian and European/South African cuisine, with the kitchen supervised by the owner, Tanja. A friendly and approachable service. Budget friendly wine list or BYO (no corkage fee).
  • La Cuccina, at the bottom of Valley Rd. is recommended for breakfasts and lunches in a buffet style with excellent country/Meditteranean cuisine. A lovely atmosphere, superb food.
  • Kitima in the old Kronendal National Monument house on the M63/main Rd recently opened. Thai and Eastern cuisine in beautiful surroundings and superb food. Bookings are essential and telephone them on 021-790-8004. The décor is tasteful, furniture comfortable and service excellent. Well worth an evening out.
  • Mariners Wharf is very popular for seafood and they also have an excellent steak menu + takeaways and they are now offering a nice breakfast menu. 021-790-1100 to book.
  • The Look-Out is a new fish restaurant near Mariners Wharf, in the harbour, overlooking the yacht basin.
  • The Pizza club is moving premises and will re-open in November at a new venu with bigger oven and a more extensive menu. Normally open Wednesdays - Sundays for 2 evening sittings and serves a 3 course meal with selection of starters, pizzas until you are saturated, topped with Massimo's home made Lemoncello and Tracy's homemade speciality deserts. Camps Bay

  • The 12 Apostles is excellent for sundowners and a meal (half way between Camps Bay and Llandudno). 021-437-9029 for a Restaurant/Terrace reservation.
  • Blues on Main Rd and The Codfather just off Main Rd - (behind Pick 'n Pay).
  • or just drive along the road, find a parking bay and chose from about 20 restaurants on the beach front.

Constantia

  • Buitenverwachting has a picnic lunch under the oaks and also a Terrace lunch
  • At Groot Constantia there are 2 main restaurants - Jonkershuis and Simon's 021-794-11430
  • Three restaurants at Uitsig serve lovely lunches in a tranquil country environment - River Café 021-794-3010, Constantia Uitsig 021-794-4480 and La Coulombe 021-794-2390.
  • Steenburg's Bistro 1682 with a wonderful setting overlooking the mountains and Silvermine nature reserve has an excellent Bistro cuisine (021-79132211) and Catharina 021-713-2222 also serves excellent meals. On Sundays Catharina has a buffet lunch with jazz musicians playing. Highly recommended for a relaxing afternoon under the trees.
  • For a light and relaxing meal try Peddlars on the Bend 021-7947747
  • There are a variety of restaurants in the High Constantia shopping centre including;
    Pastis 021-7948334, a Bistro style restaurant
    and Wang Thai 021-7940022, an excellent Thai restaurant.

City Centre

  • Café Paradiso on Kloof Rd,
  • Kotabuki for Japanese food on Mill St.
  • Bukhara is excellent for Indian food,
  • The Cape Colony for fine dining in the famous pink Mount Nelson Hotel (+ stunning high teas in the Mount Nelson for a colonial treat), Lemon, Aubergine and Rosenhof for elegance and sophistication and something different.

View the flowers:
  • Fynbos up the East coast - A good route to see the Fynbos is to drive on the N2, turn right on the R44 (at Somerset West), through Gordon's Bay and up the coast line with stunning fynbos on the mountains on your left (Kogelburg reserve). Continue onto Hermanus and spend a few hours tasting the wine or having a seafood lunch in a bistro. Whales should start coming in from July -December.
  • Spring flowers up the West coast (best in August +September)
  • Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - Stroll around the Kirstenbosch gardens off the M63. There is an indoor greenhouse with indigenous and rare plants from all over Africa. There are 2 restaurants, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with excellent views of the mountains and gardens.
  • Harold Porter Botanical Gardens: in Betty's Bay.

Walking the mountains around Hout Bay
  • Rocket Road, Hout Bay sand dunes, Sandy Bay:
    5 minute drive/6km from Makuti Lodge. A variety of routes ranging from 1-2 hours. Very hot in summer as direct sunlight and better to walk in the early morning or late evening and watch the sunset.
  • Chapmans Peak Route:
    a 12 minute drive, a relatively easy 2˝ hour return, walk up and down the same route with spectacular views of Hout Bay and Noordhoek and across towards False Bay.
