Makuti Lodge is set high up on the Southern slopes of the back of the Table Mountain range (below Myburg's corner/buttress). The cool Southern slope and shady trees offer respite from the peak summer heat and allow for a dense growth of the indigenous Protea family (Protea sugarbushes, leucospermums and leucodendrons), good protection for the Iridaceae and erica families, and a natural environment for the last of 3 remaining afromontane forests in Hout Bay. The Myburg waterfall ravine walk above us is on the western border of the large Oranje Kloof mountain reserve and is a fine example of the afromontane forest.

The 2 acre garden has 3 sections.

  1. the main garden section of an acre around the guest house has private gardens around each cottage & patio and a large section around the main swimming pool and small splash pool.
  2. the 1200m2 of flower garden has winding pathways between the towering protea bushes, rose garden and English country garden, where you can amble between the flowers and pick your own.
  3. the 3000m2 of forest garden with many indigenous Afromontane forest trees has plenty of places for relaxation and bird watching.

Walks on our doorstep - accessed directly opposite Makuti Lodge.

  • Short 1 hour return walk: to the 1st waterfall- lovely walk mostly through the indigenous afromontane forest, with a marvellous waterfall to sit under (flows during the winter) or visuals of the disa uniflora flowering (during January and February) above the 1st waterfall and also in the disa dell, 10 minutes above the 1st waterfall and in the 2nd waterfall.
  • Tough 3 hour return walk: Walk past the 1st waterfall * and on up to the 2nd waterfall through the ravine with stunning sheer cliffs. Some wonderful drip falls, cool forest shade and old tree ferns.
  • Tough 4-5 hour circuit walk:* Walk past the 2nd waterfall, across the top to North of Judas Peak, around it and down Llandudno ravine (very screedy and quite dangerous) and across to Hout Bay corner and traverse across the contour path to the top of Makuti Lodge. This must be started early during the hot summer months. Take lots of water.
  • Exhausting 5-7 hour circuit: (need a car from Constantia Nek to Makuti Lodge). Walk up through the 2nd waterfall, across the top to North of Judas Peak, up in NE direction towards Groot Kop, past Corridor Ravine and Tranquility cracks and across the old railway tracks (East direction) to overseer's cottage, across The Woodhead Dam wall, join the concrete/tar road and down towards Constantia Nek

Please remember that although these mountains are surrounded by a city, like all mountains,
they can be dangerous. Due caution needs to be exercised in adverse weather conditions.
